About Us

Hi there 👋 Welcome to Oceumi.

At first glance, we make Hawaiian shirts.

Look again.

Because at Oceumi, the first thing you see isn't always the whole story.

From across the room, you might see flowers, animals, colors, and shapes woven into a beautiful pattern.

Step a little closer and something changes.

There's a detail you didn't notice before.

Maybe an animal hiding between the leaves.

Maybe an unexpected shape.

Maybe a tiny visual joke.

And sometimes...

something just mischievous enough to make you wonder:

“Wait... is that what I think it is?”

That's usually where the fun begins.

And that's Oceumi.

It Started With Ryan & Lisa

Oceumi began with Ryan, our CEO & Co-founder, and Lisa, our Co-founder & Lead Designer.

Ryan had always liked Hawaiian shirts for one simple reason:

They weren't supposed to be boring.

These were shirts made for vacations, weekends, boats, backyard dinners, spontaneous plans, and those nights that somehow end much later than expected.

They were supposed to have personality.

But the more shirts Ryan saw, the more familiar everything started to feel.

The same flowers.

The same palm trees.

The same flamingos, sunsets, and tropical leaves.

Different shirts.

Somehow, the same story.

Ryan didn't think the world needed another Hawaiian shirt like that.

So one day, he asked Lisa a question:

“What if the best part of the shirt wasn't the first thing people noticed?”

Lisa paused.

And then she started drawing.

Lisa Had an Idea

Lisa wasn't interested in making a louder Hawaiian shirt.

She wanted to make a more interesting one.

Something you could genuinely wear because the pattern looked good...

but with another layer waiting underneath.

So she began experimenting with designs that worked from two distances.

From across the room:

A beautiful pattern.

Step closer:

Something feels different.

Look again:

There it is.

A hidden animal.

An unexpected shape.

A small joke tucked between the details.

Sometimes something playful.

Sometimes something strange.

And sometimes something with just enough attitude that you probably shouldn't explain it to everyone at the dinner table.

That was the idea.

Give someone one reason to notice the shirt — and another reason to keep looking.

Then came the reaction Ryan and Lisa had been waiting for.

Someone looked at one of the early designs.

Paused.

Leaned closer.

Looked again.

Then laughed:

“Wait... is that what I think it is?”

Ryan looked at Lisa.

Lisa smiled.

They knew they had something.

Designed for the Second Look

That little moment became one of the ideas behind Oceumi.

We don't believe standing out means being the loudest person in the room.

Sometimes the most interesting thing you can wear is something people don't completely understand the first time they see it.

From ten feet away:

“Nice shirt.”

From five feet away:

“Wait...”

And up close:

“Okay, now I see it.”

Some Oceumi patterns reveal themselves immediately.

Others make you work for it a little.

We like those even more.

Because a great pattern shouldn't just decorate a shirt.

It should give you something to discover.

And occasionally...

something to talk about.

Made to Start a Conversation

This became another part of what we loved about the idea.

Imagine you're wearing an Oceumi shirt at a backyard dinner.

Someone across the table keeps looking at it.

You notice.

They notice that you noticed.

Then eventually:

“Okay... I have to ask. What's going on with your shirt?”

And now you're talking.

Maybe about the hidden detail they just found.

Maybe about the design.

Maybe about where you bought it.

Maybe about your last trip.

Maybe about where they're going next.

Five minutes ago, two people had nothing to talk about.

Now they do.

All because of a pattern.

We think that's pretty cool.

Some shirts get compliments.

We'd rather make shirts that start conversations.

Every Pattern Is a Destination

As Oceumi grew, the idea became bigger than hidden details.

Ryan and Lisa realized that every good pattern seemed to create a little world of its own.

Some remind you of somewhere you've been.

A coastline at sunset.

A garden you wandered into on vacation.

A strange roadside stop.

A late dinner that somehow became your favorite memory from the whole trip.

Others take you somewhere that doesn't exist at all.

A world filled with hidden animals.

Unexpected shapes.

Tiny jokes.

Strange little details.

And things waiting to be discovered by the people paying attention.

That's when the words behind Oceumi started to make sense:

Every Pattern Is a Destination.

Because a destination doesn't always have to be somewhere on a map.

Sometimes it's a memory.

Sometimes it's a feeling.

Sometimes it's somewhere you're dreaming of going next.

And sometimes...

it's simply wherever a pattern takes your imagination.

Not Made for Everyone

We know something else, too.

Not every Oceumi design will be for everyone.

And we're okay with that.

Some patterns are beautiful.

Some are playful.

Some are strange.

Some are subtle.

And some are just a little more mischievous than they first appear.

We'd rather make something a few people absolutely love than something everyone looks at and says:

“It's fine.”

Before a new pattern becomes an Oceumi shirt, there's one question that gets asked again and again:

“Have we seen this before?”

If the answer is yes...

Lisa goes back to the drawing board.

Because there are already enough ordinary shirts in the world.

We don't need to add another one.

But Oceumi Is More Than Two People

Ryan and Lisa may be the two faces at the front of Oceumi.

But they're far from the whole story.

Behind every pattern is a small team turning an idea on a screen into something you'll actually want to wear.

There are people working alongside Lisa on colors, patterns, and those tiny details you might not notice until your second look.

There are people obsessing over fabric, fit, samples, and whether the finished shirt feels as good as the design looks.

There are people coordinating production and fulfillment so an idea that started at our table eventually makes its way to your door.

And there are people answering emails, solving problems, listening to feedback, and taking care of the people who decided to give a small brand like ours a chance.

Different people.

Different jobs.

Different personalities.

But there's one question you'll hear around our team a lot:

“Would we be excited to receive this ourselves?”

If the answer isn't an immediate yes, we're probably not finished yet.

Because Oceumi isn't just Ryan's idea.

It isn't just Lisa's sketchbook.

It's a small team of people trying to make something we'd genuinely want to wear ourselves.

Something we'd send to a friend.

Something we'd pack for a trip.

And maybe...

something we'd stop a stranger across the room to ask about.

From All of Us at Oceumi

Oceumi started because we wanted Hawaiian shirts to feel interesting again.

Not louder.

Not trendier.

Not another version of something you've already seen.

More original.

More curious.

More fun to discover.

So whether you wear yours on vacation, on a boat, to a backyard dinner, at a party, or simply on an ordinary Friday that could use a little less ordinary...

Take another look at the pattern.

There's probably more there than you noticed the first time.

And if someone leans a little closer and asks:

“Wait... is that what I think it is?”

Smile.

Now you know exactly why we made it.

Every Pattern Is a Destination.

Welcome to Oceumi.
